About this website

The photographs and information on this website are intended primarily to be a reference source and an identification aid, where appropriate. Each broad area, e.g. Birds, is broken down into sections and further information about these, and the related sub-sections, is given at the top of that area's main page.
Most of the individual images are labelled, but it is not impossible that some wildlife is incorrectly identified, so I would recommend cross-checking where there is a doubt. I have included some less good images where it is considered that they might still be helpful for identification purposes only. The reference books I have used are listed in each section's main page. An Index to the Flora and Fauna of each country appears near the top of that country's main page in People and Places. All the images are my own.
High resolution versions of some images are available through either Alamy or directly from myself. A selection of these images is available for viewing on FlickR - Click here
About Peter Gilbert - The Photographer
Like most amateur photographers and amateur naturalists I have collected a considerable number of photographs, taken over many years. The earliest still continue to yellow and fade in old-style photo albums, secreted away in the attic or the backs of cupboards. More recently, they sit quietly on hard-drives and act as a reference point for the wildlife I see, particularly in my own garden and the Northamptonshire countryside, or as a reminder of the places I have visited, both in the UK and abroad. Otherwise, they are also mostly hidden from view.
The idea of sharing these images was prompted by two things: firstly, encountering a website called Lotmoths (www.lotmoths.com) which enabled me to positively identify most of the moths I had photographed in Burgundy and the Loire Valley and which I was struggling to find information on; secondly, discovering some less common insects in my village – and in my own garden – which anyone interested in Natural History might come across. This site also charts my own progress as a naturalist and a photographer, which still finds me only a short distance up the learning curve. So, apologies for the less sharp, out-of-focus, maybe shaky images from my early digital days.
I would be pleased to hear from anyone who has further information to add or would like further information from myself.
